In December 2018, FEMA: the Federal Emergency Management Agency conducted the comprehensive management of flood-prone areas conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to assess and plan responses to Hurricane Maria a year after the widesread destruction that left over 2000 dead and most of the island without electricity. The Metabolic Studio in collabortation with the Center for the Study of the Force Majeure presented an alternate vision of flood control measures drawing from insights related to the history of the LA river and a holistic eco-system perspective for regenerating the living systems in Puerto Rico. Red & Jaime visited with many local organizations working during the aftermath of Hurricane Maria to support communities in their efforts to rubuild and create more autonomous energy and agricultural systems at the local level. An overarching theme was the colonization and occupation of Puerto Rico as an island state and people by the United States, as it continues to be extracted from and oppressed politically and economically.
